Navigating the Journey: Relationships and Sexuality Education for Years 1-10

Navigating the Journey has been specifically developed for school-based settings (including alternative education settings).

Lesson plans and learning activities are written in the context of use in a classroom setting. While the content is relevant for all rangatahi in Years 1-10, we have more suitable resources and support available for community settings that may be better suited to your rangatahi — contact your local Community Health Promoter to find out more.

Navigating the Journey is based on the Māori concept of hauora, and the lessons and activities are led by Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Whā model of health and wellbeing. It's an inclusive resource that celebrates diversity, and invites students to explore their own individual and collective identities, including their cultural identities, as they navigate their lifetime journeys of growth and learning as sexual beings. 

Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa believe that schools know their communities best, and will already have a good idea of how to meet the cultural needs of their students and their whānau. We encourage schools to work in partnership with their local communities to develop and evaluate their Relationships and Sexuality Education programmes.

Navigating the Journey is a flexible resource that can be adapted by schools to ensure that the content is culturally appropriate for their communities.

Navigating the Journey is designed to be delivered by teachers and educators rather than external providers, such as Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa.

Relationships and Sexuality Education is one of the seven key areas of learning in health and physical education as specified in The New Zealand Curriculum. This means students are taught this subject by their teachers just like any other subject within The New Zealand Curriculum. We understand that some teachers and schools may find this challenging, which is why we offer support to those that need it.
